'Mind Trap' RHS Chelsea 2017 wins GOLD

MIND TRAP Fresh Garden for RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017, Site FR82 This garden is a physical manifestation of my personal experience of suffering from and living with depression. It's purpose is to help those that suffer in similar ways to be assured that they are not alone in their own personal struggles. It also endeavours to explain to others that have no personal experience of suffering what it may feel like, by way of a physical tangible living garden with the use of symbolism and creating an atmosphere. https://www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/rhs-chelsea-flower-show/Gardens/2017/mind-trap A huge thank you to everyone involved. Without you, the garden would have remained an idea on paper.

A large country garden just outside Omagh started life as a totally blank canvas.  The existing house was completely renovated and remodelled by the client who was a builder.  As a result the garden as a whole needed redesigning.

The garden was entered and won a prestigious award from the ALCI (Association of Landscape Contractors of Ireland) award in 2007 for private gardens over 10,000.

The brief was straight forward in this instance as the clients asked for several areas for entertaining and enjoying relaxing in the summer and evening sun and space for their children to freely play.  As it was a larger garden they were also wanting to keep the maintenance to a minimum.  They had recently purchased a BBQ house which they wanted to incorporate as close to the house as they could.

It was important that the garden fitted into the surrounding landscape and as it was fairly open to the elements planting was put in to create shelter without interrupting the views from the house or the patio areas.  As the house was to be clad in natural stone it was prudent to use similar materials in the patio areas and paths.  The resulting garden had a very relaxed feel to it with plenty of areas to entertain spread out over a couple of different levels.
